PMax Insights by Mike Rhodes: the Performance Max report Google does not give you
The community's standard script for splitting Performance Max spend and results by channel, with search category and asset group detail written to a Google Sheet.
Performance Max reports as a single line: one campaign, one spend figure, and very little said about where the money went. Mike Rhodes' PMax Insights script is the community's answer, and has been since PMax launched. It builds a Google Sheet that breaks spend and performance down by channel, so you can finally see the Shopping, Display, Video and Search split, alongside search category insights and asset group detail the UI keeps folded away.
Why it made the cut
This is probably the most recommended single Google Ads script of the PMax era. It is actively versioned (the free release is well past version 25), walked through in independent tutorials across YouTube and the PPC trade press, and used by agencies as the standard first diagnostic on any PMax account. When practitioners argue about what PMax is really doing with a budget, this sheet is usually the evidence on the table.
How to run it
- Get the free script from the source page below; the current free release is also published openly on GitHub.
- Make a copy of the template Sheet the script expects, and paste the Sheet URL into the script's configuration.
- Paste the script into Tools, Bulk actions, Scripts in Google Ads, authorise it, and preview the first run.
- Schedule it daily and read the channel split before you judge the campaign.
Worth knowing
The free version covers the channel split and core insights; a paid version with deeper analysis is sold separately, and the author runs a community for setup help. We link to the source rather than hosting the code, so you always get the current release, and the credit stays where it belongs.
